Social Function with Alcohol Checklist
Is your student organization hoping to host an event with alcohol? Keep the following in mind as you plan your event.
- Make sure you have read the Yale College Undergraduate Regulations around alcohol.
- Keep the service location of alcoholic beverages well lit
- Make sure you have non-alcoholic beverages available and they are physically separated from the alcohol
- An authorized bartender should be in charge of dispensing alcohol
- For events in Residential Colleges, read and follow procedures set forth by the Council of the Heads of College
- For events elsewhere on campus, the University office responsible for scheduling the use of that space must give your group advance approval.
- If you are hosting your event in a residential area of the university, keep in mind that quiet hours are Sunday-Thursday, 11pm-8am, and Friday-Saturday, 1am-8am.
The Law
Student organizations hoping to host events with alcohol should keep in mind that Connecticut law prohibits the direct or indirect sale of alcoholic beverages except by the holder of a valid liquor permit. The University does not hold such a permit for undergraduate social functions. It is also against Connecticut law for any person to give alcoholic beverages to an underage person. The legal drinking age in Connecticut is 21.
It is illegal to serve alcoholic beverages to an intoxicated person regardless of his or her age.
The University prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on its premises or as a part of any of its activities.
