Your organization must register with the Yale College Dean’s Office if your group
- conducts meetings periodically,
- sponsors activities on the campus of Yale University,
- provides a service, or
- raises funds within the University for charitable purposes.

Registration requirements protect Yale’s tax-exempt status and ensure that the purpose and activities of the organizations are consistent with the established purposes of the University. Registration is further required because activities of student organizations frequently appear to involve identification with the University. However, registration does not imply official approval by the University of the activities of any undergraduate organization, nor does it indicate any responsibility for them.
Registration is an annual requirement and returning organizations are required to renew their registration annually. Once approved, an organization’s registration remains valid until the following academic year.
Organizations that were officially registered in the 2016-2017 Academic Year and will continue to be active in the 2017-2018 Academic Year must re-register between August 1, 2017 and September 15, 2017.
Organizations will re-register via our new organization management platform, Yale Connect.
Registration is ordinarily valid for one academic year. However, if a student organization wishes to change its activities from those outlined in their registration or alter aspects of their group, then the organization must update its information online for review and approval.
At least one officer of each organization is also required to attend a fall orientation meeting sponsored by the Yale College Dean’s Office for specific information about the privileges and responsibilities of registered groups. In the Fall of 2017, this fall orientation meeting is being replaced by the Student Organizations Summit, scheduled for Saturday, September 9, 2017.

Undergraduates may register new organizations for the 2017-2018 Academic Year between August 1, 2017 and September 15, 2017.
The application to register will be available via Yale Connect. Starting August 1, 2017, you may click “Register New Organization” under the “Organizations” tab and choose Yale College. If you do not choose “Yale College,” your registration will not be seen by the correct office and your group may not be approved as a registered organization.
The online registration form will require, among other things, a description of the purposes of the organization, a constitution and set of bylaws, and the identification of officers or other leaders.
To help new student organizations establish a foundation and ensure all your questions are answered, we have launched a required onboarding process. Once you register, we will be in touch to get your Onboarding Process started. To read more about this process, click here.
Organizations that are established for the purpose of selling or renting items or paying students cannot be registered student organizations, but may be able to operate as Associated Student Agencies.
